New Yahoo format

From: (kotlarek@wi.rr.com) | Date: 2014-01-20 19:37:19 UTC-08:00

I don't know if any of the moderators of this group have been switched to the new Yahoo format, but I was several months ago.

If any active moderators have also been switched, it might be nice if they could customize the photo that appears in the group banner heading.  Right now it is showing a guy mountain biking up a rock face.

It's actually a pic of a letterboxer stamping in only a few feet away but so stealthily that the biker doesn't notice.... :)

Hi! One of your moderators here. The new format is called "Neo" and is causing worldwide fits of complaints to yahoo.

As far as I can figure out, the Neo banner is not customizable by moderator/owners. But there is a trick you can use: if you are signed in to yahoogroups most people will see the old format, while Neo is shown to people not signed in.

I could be completely wrong on that though, because getting any moderator support regarding Neo from yahoo is impossible! So far the yahoogroup moderator forums are overwhelmed with complaints and devoid of any actual help or facts from yahoo.

I have a sinking feeling that they will be abandoning the groups model soon. I remember the panic when we switched from eGroups to yahoo, now we're being slain by Neo-ites.

Oh, you can definitely change the photo in Neo.  I'm the owner/moderator of a Yahoo Group for our hiking club and I have put up various photos as our banner (changing images with the seasons) in the new format.  Yahoo converted members on some type of rolling system and I see the new format no matter how I log in.

I know that there have been LOTS of complaints about the new format, but the members of our hiking club (~200 members) have been able to roll with it.  Our regional LB board is also functioning OK.  We have customized banner photos, can still upload & view other photos, upload files, create and update databases, etc.  The Texas regional Yahoo group has also customized their banner photo. Yahoo has been slowly working through the bugs and they definitely should have done a LOT more testing BEFORE forcing it onto users, but it seems to be improving.

Ahhh, maybe we should take this off line so as not to bore everyone else with off topic technicalities. But I'd love to get some tips on customizing Neo if you have a moment.

Based on my own experience with it, I'm not sure that the idea that yahoo is rolling out Neo to certain users is even correct. I think that's something we all came up with to explain things that yahoo isn't making public. We're all a bunch of mushrooms, kept in the dark ;)

The trouble with stuff like this is that forum users feel an ownership in the community, and we don't like it when the big bad owner swoops in and messes around with our home without our permission.

Anyway, if you have a moment to point out how to edit in Neo, or know of a website that goes over it, I would love to hear. Jay

As the owner of the TX Yahoo Group, I was able to change our banner by moving the mouse over the picture and then clicking on the link that popped up asking if I wanted to change the cover.  Not sure if moderators can also do this or not.

BTW, even though most of the functionality appears to still be there, I don't like the "look and feel" of the new format, and browsing archives seems to be more difficult now.
